Development at the Edge: The Future of Regional Urbanization
Join CMAP for a panel discussion of one of the oldest and most contentious topics facing the Chicago region: the on-going expansion of our urbanized area.
Between 2001-15, approximately 140,000 acres of the Chicago region's agricultural and natural lands were developed, coinciding with a population shift away from the region's core. Land conversion provides housing, jobs, and economic activity, but can impact environmental quality, rural character, and disinvestment in older communities. Meanwhile, the cost of providing services and infrastructure continues to rise. Can we afford to continue to urbanize? Will we continue to urbanize?

Food to Market Challenge
Kane County competes for project award
Kane County's project team put on a strong showing during the much anticipated Food to Market Challenge pitch event on October 26 th. Although Kane County was not ultimately selected as the winner of the competition's $500,000 prize, the team received high praise from the panel of judges as well as the numerous food system advocates and leaders in attendance.
The competition, organized by the Chicago Community Trust and the Kinship Foundation, was designed to finance one team's innovative solution for overcoming the supply chain obstacles that restrict a local and sustainable food market in the Chicago region. Kane County's project team was among the five 
finalists chosen to present their proposal during the pitch event held at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art.
The Kane team's proposal included three focus areas that were driven in large part by the County's recently completed Food Hub Feasibility Study. In preparing for the competition, the project team composed a proposal video which summarizes the various elements of the team's plan.

Kane County Pumpkin Recycling
Area residents have a sustainable option for pumpkin disposal
As of early November, Kane County, partnering with Pushing the Envelope Farm in Geneva, was able to redirect nearly 7,000 pounds of pumpkin from being dumped in a landfill. The pumpkins will instead be used by the farm to feed chickens, fire up their compost piles and nourish the soil, returning nutrients to the gardens in which they will grow organic vegetables next season.
Pushing the Envelope Farm will continue to accept disposed pumpkins for recycling through the end of November. The pumpkins can be dropped off at 33W699 Averill Road, Geneva, IL 60134. Look for a gray house on the south side of the street, just off of Kirk Road. The drop-off location will have a sign and a wheelbarrow where pumpkins can be placed.
